About the event
The word temazcal comes from Nahuatl temazcalli and means house of steam, in northern lands known as a sweat lodge. It is a sacred center of healing and purification through the use of hot stones and steam, an ancient medicine that has therapeutic properties physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The temazcal ceremony is one of symbolic rebirth in which we are asked to face ourselves and find the healing power within each of us. Inside the temazcal we invoke the medicine of the four elements as we pray, sing, and practice silence, inviting both personal and collective healing.
Many cultures have a tradition of using steam baths to purify, heal, and restore balance to the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. The temazcal that we know in Mexico today is a culmination of traditions gathered and shared from dierent cultures of Mesoamerica. A temazcal is a small, low, enclosed structure that mimics the womb. Stones heated outside and brought in one by one provide the heat, and water infused with medicinal plants are introduced onto the hot stones to create steam.
Participants sit in a circle around the stones in the darkness and are invited to dive deep inside, release stagnant energy, and receive potent healing. Our temazcal is a nomadic structure that we are happy to be able to travel with from Oaxaca to connect with and tap into the powerful desert medicine of 29 Palms.
